Regional Haze Crisis: Why Transparency Matters

The regional haze problem continues to raise concerns in Malaysia and neighbouring countries, especially when forest and land fires occur in Indonesia.

Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM) has called on the Indonesian government to publicly disclose information about 57 business entities whose concession areas were affected by fires. The organisation believes greater transparency could help authorities identify those responsible and take appropriate legal action.

According to information released by the Indonesian authorities, the affected concession areas cover more than 33,500 hectares across Sumatra and Kalimantan.

The haze is not only an environmental issue. It can also affect daily life, public health, schools, tourism and travel across the region. Poor visibility and unhealthy air quality may cause difficulties for travellers, especially those travelling between cities and using airports, highways and other transportation services.

For visitors planning a trip to Malaysia, it is advisable to check the latest air-quality and weather conditions before travelling. Travellers should also remain flexible with their itinerary if haze conditions become severe.

Travelling Safely During Haze

If you are travelling during a haze period:

  • Check the latest air-quality information before leaving.
  • Reduce outdoor activities when air quality is unhealthy.
  • Wear a suitable mask if recommended by health authorities.
  • Keep car windows closed when necessary and use the vehicle’s air-conditioning system.
  • Allow extra travel time when visibility is reduced.
  • Check for possible flight or transport disruptions before travelling.

Regional haze requires cooperation between governments, businesses and communities. Greater transparency and stronger enforcement can help reduce the risk of repeated forest fires and protect people across Southeast Asia.

For travellers, the most important step is to stay informed, plan ahead and prioritise safety throughout the journey.
